those big cross-hatch scribble clouds seem unusually rough for romita—not that i mind them—but as always he shines in the details: the matchbox and butts, the rain hitting the pavement. that was what dazzled me when i first encountered his work; i had been reading chronologically through ditko (who i still love a ton, in a different way) but when romita stepped in with his clean, romance comic lines and dramatic framings, it was like it burst into technicolor¹. everything felt bigger, more cinematic.
