RE: slkwrm
you know that thing sometimes where you’re sitting around really drunk (not at the peak, more in the dimming hours) and somebody says something and by this point nobody can be bothered with elegant phrasing or anything but it’s coming straight from the heart, and somehow it stumbles into grace and it rings true like you’d known it yr whole life but to hear it actually said out is...

RE: things that i do for fun(??)
right now i’m watching wheel of fortune and listening to scratch acid, with the volumes set loud and roughly even so that they’re perpetually clashing. (one of yow’s screams from “she said” came in perfect time with the zoom on the bull’s skull in the longhorn steakhouse ad.)
RE: every now and then i go to the imdb boards
Hollywood films = how we want the world to be. Independent films = how the world really is.
…then i get the fuck out of there.

RE: wet slate
at nslc stores, all the bottles have little descriptive tags under them on the shelf. one white wine claims to finish on a note of wet slate. am i missing something here? how would one know what wet slate tastes like, short of, say, licking tombstones? why would this be at all desirable?
RE: suggested linguistic holidays
“misnamed animal group day”: constantly refer to groups of animals by species-inappropriate terms; i.e. a murder of fish, a school of buffalo, a flock of wolves
“assign life to food by pronouns day”: refer to all food with living-thing pronouns; i.e. “have you tried their reuben? he’s really good”

RE: pat sajak
i’m not sure whether or not i like pat sajak. he reminds me a great deal of my high school english teacher—similar voice, similar self-effacing wit. sometimes it’s a refreshing alternative to the usual hostly gloss, others it seems smarmy (“too used car salesman”, my friend described it).
today, when a puzzle turned out to “if these walls could talk”, sajak...

RE: ilu cam
As popular as Cam has become from his raps, he’s almost as well-known for being a hip-hop fashion plate. He’s looking to set his next milestone, and get paid for it at the same time: Believe it or not, Killa is trying to patent his own color.
“I’m working with some scientists,” he said. “I don’t know how I’m gonna go about doing it. It’s...

SCHOOL OF ROCKISM
(more serious sidenote (i feel like i might’ve mentioned this before, but): i haven’t seen it in ages, and granted i’ve never been much for jack black, but i remember last i saw it not liking how silverman was written into such a stereotypical harpy character, in collusion w/the whole “don’t let women boss you around” thing that subplot had...

RE: opinions on the smiths
the queen is dead is not that great? it has a couple of great tracks, for sure, but also a couple that i always skip or at least don’t really care about either way. meat is murder is pretty much all aces save the title track, and if the first half+a track of louder than bombs was its own album that’d probably be my no. 1.

RE: g.i. joe: retaliation
really excited for this. i saw rise of cobra on a whim—guess i was bored—late in its theatrical run. i wasn’t into joe growing up, and the film had been pretty much unanimously trashed, so i went in cynical. but i ended up loving it: it was a big dumb action movie in the absolute best sense, like if all the epics you played out with action figures when you were a kid were made into a real...

Way better. He didn’t appropriate. He synthesized.
That’s my feeling. Elvis came to the music with a sincere love and appreciation of it. I think it’s fine if done for the right reasons. It’s a shame that it took Elvis to break rock & roll to a wide audience, because folks like...

“tell it to ian mackaye”—uh, he seems to have got his shit straight a bunch since, but i think the very suspect “sex=groupies” notion that was built into his conception of straight-edge back in the day disqualifies him from this sort of saintly invocation.
