RE: some favorite details, #3
that guitar noise after the chorus of “long snake moan”; it reminds me of the godzilla 2000 roar “this is somethin’ oooooolllddd…and diirrrrrtttttteeeeehhhhhhh” “this ain’t the EMBRYO d.b.!!” the guitar in mbv’s “sometimes”; the way it flattens out to a buzz like a blown out highlight that “ooh” in “soft...

RE: the finer points of fast food, vol. 4636:...
there are two mcdonald’s that i go to regularly in this city (the others i’ve been to only by drive-thru, or not at all). they’re both 24hr locations (which accounts for much of my business with them), both on big commercial streets. each, however, has its own flavor, subtle but notably different if you go enough - with regards not so much to the food, which is generally...

RE: pretentious stuff i've said while really high
so the other day on this message board people were talking about the oscars and somebody complained about how the hurt locker won and it didn’t even have good box office!! and i said “who the fuck are the suburbs” then someone didn’t get it and so i explained it and somewhere in the process i called the academy “flabby, pretending, weak-eyed devils” and i think...

RE: lost in translation
i think i’ve boiled it down to that i like sofia coppola as a director but not as a writer. (disclaimer: i’ve yet to see marie antoinette or somewhere.) her movies are always a pleasure to watch/listen to, for sure. lost in translation, in particular. beautifully beautifully shot, and the soundtrack’s awesome, and murray’s really good in it, and it’s just...

RE: the knack
so, i dunno if it’s a generation gap thing or maybe i just wasn’t in the right places or what, but “my sharona” never really hit overplayed for me. i mean, i knew it, but it wasn’t one of those, like, “never have to listen to it because it’s burned into my brain” kinda deals. and holy shit wow it’s really good. the rest of the album is pretty...

– man, i was just trying to listen to that track i like from david gilmour’s first solo album (it’s actually really good), and then you get all up in my face with this straight edge rockism shit seriously, it’s like prog/anything related to prog just brings out the worst commenters ...

RE: ostensibly my useless 2 cents on this whole...
i have a real habit of coming around to stuff really late, and then sometimes really liking it and feeling like a dumbass for whatever half-baked “oh, they look like one of those bands” i brushed it off with at the time. i also generally like/retain some modicum of fondness for stuff that i really liked at whatever point. i mean, there are certainly things i like less than i used to,...

re: gin blossoms - “hey jealousy”, “hold me down” and “til i hear it from you” are all pretty great. re: moonrise kingdom - no, i haven’t seen the trailer yet, and no, i don’t plan to. re: australian alt rock in the 90s - goddamn there was some good shit in there. there are a couple of bands that deserve posts to themselves, i’ll get around...

RE: jedi mind tricks
stoupe is a fantastic producer, but the more of vinnie paz i hear the duller and samier he sounds. the first album, the psycho-social cd, is a particularly sad case; beats are fantastic - creepy, grimy, knock plenty - but then we have stuff like For aliens truth devour Orthodox first relativistic equations for power The shower of acid rain brings pain to the land the later albums, i think...

I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone
I was trying to describe you to someone a few days ago. You don’t look like any girl I’ve ever seen before. I couldn’t say “Well she looks just like Jane Fonda, except that she’s got red hair, and her mouth is different and of course, she’s not a movie star…” I couldn’t say that because you dont look like Jane Fonda at all. I finally ended up describing you as a movie I saw when I was a child in...

RE: "don't talk like"
i love the opening of “don’t talk like”, in context of a proper album spin; it reminds me, for some reason, of commercial break music, the way it pops in - something to do with that kinda glide, and the slight drums, i think.

RE: a thing that used to be around, but isn't...
there used to be…it actually is fuzzy now, whether it was a mailbox or a newspaper box - a newspaper box, i’m pretty sure - but anyway, it was along a route i often walked last year, and scrawled on it in sharpie or something was “HONK! 9/11 inside job”. i always found this surprisingly funny, and for a long time it was my automatic assocation for both “honk”...

RE: a word proposal, revised
i decided that i like the sound of “effrangled” more than “frangled”; captures the sense better, i think. also, i got the definition down a little tighter: somehow wearing a flaw (e.g. clutter, damages) as though it were deliberately applied for some sort of aesthetic appeal. example: a light blue sedan, effrangled with autumnal patches of rust.

RE: a series of singles that some label should put...
the theme of the series is pizza. a bunch of bands are commissioned to write songs about pizza. the records are all picture discs with images of pizzas (each band is asked their favorite kind of pizza, and that’ll be their side). they are packaged, of course, in miniature pizza boxes.

RE: taco bell
i love taco bell. i mean, come on - you can buy a taco with, like, the change you picked up off the ground at the mall! and it’s even good! (i’ve always thought it a wonderful little yin and yang deal that they’re (around here, anyway) almost always doubled up with kfc, which is ridiculously expensive.) and taco bell knows that it’s the cheap place. it knows it well,...
